- 1905 May 3:
- Moritz Werner Fenchel is born in Berlin.
- 1923-1928:
- Student in mathematics and physics at the University of Berlin.
- 1928:
- Inauguraldissertation in mathematics submitted in Berlin.
- 1928-33:
- Assistant to Professor E. Landau in Göttingen.
Fenchel on leave 1930 Oct. 1 - 1931 Sep. 30 on a Rockefeller Fellowship.
He stays in Rome (with Levi-Civita) and Copenhagen (with Bohr and
Bonnesen). Further visits to Denmark in 1932.
- 1933 April-September:
- He is displaced by the Nazi rule and escapes to Denmark.
- 1933 December:
- He marries the German refugee mathematician Käte Sperling.
- 1933-37:
- He has minor jobs at the Mathematics Institute in Copenhagen,
like assistant editor of the Zentralblatt, translator of
mathematics books, etc.
- 1938-42:
- He is teaching the admission course at the Polytechnic (Copenhagen).
- 1942-47:
- Lektor in mathematics (geometry) at University of Copenhagen. From
August 1943 to June 1945 he stays in Sweden as most other Danish Jews.
He is teaching at the Danish School in Lund.
- 1947-52:
- Docent in mathematics for chemical engineers at the Polytechnic
(Copenhagen). On leave from spring 1949 to spring 1951 staying at the
University of South California, Stanford University and Princeton
University.
- 1952-56:
- Professor in mechanics at the Polytechnic (Copenhagen).
- 1956-74:
- Professor in mathematics at the University of Copenhagen.
- 1988 January 24:
- Fenchel dies.
Elected as member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters
in 1946.
